What is your motivation for living?

What is your motivation for continued existence?

Or, what do you get out of life? What's worth living for? And for that matter, what is worth dying for?

You're born, and you don't choose to whom or where.

You live given your circumstances in life.

You die, again having no clue when. It could be tonight.

You are judged by God based on what you did in your life.

You can do nothing to live up to God's perfect standards in life. You lie, cheat, steal, lust, hate, disobey, rebel, blaspheme, backtalk, gossip and covet all throughout your life.

God pulls the books and counts each thing you did wrong. Then he counts the things you thought wrong. He adds them up.

He sees that you have broken His law and you deserve Justice, and there is nothing you can say back. If you tell of your good things that you did, he'll just say that that was what you were supposed to do anyway. So why did you break God's law?

You're found Guilty, no questions asked, and nothing you can do about it. You are bound and shackled and sent to eternal prision away from God.

That is the fate of all mankind. There is no hope for humanity in their own good works, because they're ALL wicked, especially the nice ones. They all think bad, lustful, or hateful things all the time.

Look at the other answers to prove my point...

So what use is it? Why live? Simple. For you, to go as long as you can before being sent to eternal hell. Because that is what you deserve along with the rest of us. Many try to take comfort in a lie. So be it. But their vein belief won't matter once they die.

So what hope is there? All have fallen short of what God expects, and God must exercise Justice in order to be good.

But God did something so that you or I or anyone here would not have to end up in eternal punishment. God came down from heaven as a man, in Jesus Christ and lived a perfect life. He didn't lie, cheat, steal, etc. He was blameless before man and God. Then He went to His death on a cross. He was beaten and bruised, tortured, and hung by his hands and feet. Then he died.

His death was an exchange for our wicked lives. He suffered punishment for every time you disobeyed your parents, or lied to someone, or lusted after some person. In His suffering on the cross, when you die, you can be set free from prision, because your punishment for your sins has already been paid. But...

You must repent of your sins. That means turn from them. Hate them, and stop doing them. Would you go out and commit murder again if someone paid your fine with his life, after you committed murder the first time? Apologize for your wickedness and turn from it. This may seem hard, but the consequences after you die is much worse.

Then you must trust in Jesus because you owe Him your entire life for dieing for you. You must give Him your life, and hold on to him in the same way you hold on to a parachute to get you safely to the ground. Jesus is the one and only way for you to get safely to heaven after you die. Anything more or less, you risk falling, and going splat.

So since Jesus had done such a wonderful work for me, I should and do thank Him and love Him for his kindness and mercy. While I was yet a lustful self centered sinner, He died for me anyway, knowing that all the sins that I committed, He would have to suffer God's wrath for. So now, every time I sin, I think about the fact that that was one more beating that Jesus endured. Every time I am unjustly angry, I realize that Jesus suffered the punishment for that sin as well. Knowing that I can do nothing but fall on my face and repent of it, and ask for forgiveness. And ask that He would help me not to stay in that sin.

Now, as for living life, to live is for Christ, and to die is gain, because I am completely forgiven by God, my maker, and I have been adopted into His kingdom. When I die physically, there is no loss, because my treasures are in heaven.

Christ is worth living for and worth dying for. There is nothing else, no vanity, no lust, no religion, no person, that is worthy of serving outside of Christ. What I get out of life, is eternal life, and absolute assurance that I will be in heaven, no matter what I do, because I can do nothing right anyway. I am going to heaven because I am not a good person, but I am a bad person saved by a Good God.

So what is going to happen when you die? Will you be innocent or guilty, or will you be freed by God because you lived a life of repentance and trust in Christ? Get right with God today, because tomorrow may never come.

I find it interesting that the very first thing you bring up in the meaning of life is judgment and punishment for sins.

Why must god who made everything this world has to offer be limited to the punitive judge who is only concerned about us obeying his rules? I mean, wouldn't there be more to god than some authority figure that demands obedience? And if god wanted us all to be perfect, than why give us the free will to make mistakes? Why would god make a creation that would end up disappointing him because we "made a god of our selves".

If god wanted all of us to be 100% submissive, he could have made us that way, but instead he gives us a will and personality of our own, while still demanding we all be the same? The best answer I have is that god wanted creation to have the choice to obey. Well, that's nice, but why must we endure eternal suffering if we don't comply? Why can't there be a 3rd or 4th option as well? Why must the only way to escape to be a 100 percent loyal servant to god? Why must god demand sincere love yet promises eternal torture if we don't?

These are just some things I've been wondering.

Yes there is. God is both completely Good and strict, but God is also loving and merciful.

God shows His anger at wrong doings by judging people and pouring out His Just anger upon them just as a Good human Judge could morally never let a guilty murderer go free.

But God demonstrates His love for us by becoming a man, living a perfectly sinless and obedient, and then dieing for us so as to pay the price for justice. A criminal can go free if the penalty for that crime has been paid.

There is no greater love that you can demonstrate towards someone than to sacrifice your life for them. That's what Jesus did on the cross for you.

    > Why would god make a creation that would end up disappointing him because we "made a god of our selves"?

The biblical answer is this. God created man to fully demonstrate His attributes. He demonstrates his hatred for sin by casting sinners into hell. He demonstrates His love for man by becoming a man in Jesus Christ, then sacrificing His life for us that we do not have to suffer the just payment for our sins.

The purpose of life is that God be glorified by displaying His attributes. The bible says God made man in His own image after His likeness. We are God's image bearers. When we represent God accurately, we are fulfilling our purpose in life.

We were made to worship. Some worship money, some worship false gods, some worship their own lusts. But we were meant to worship God.

God was disappointed with humanity. Read through Genesis 6. The heart of men are naturally wicked. God demonstrated His anger at sin by destroying mankind, but He demonstrated His kindness by sparing a few. As a side note, God tolerated the wickedness of mankind for over 1400 years before he flooded the earth. That demonstrates that he bears with people for a long time, giving them every opportunity to repent and turn back to Him.

A simple analogy may help in this case. If you programmed a robot to obey you, that robot is a slave and that robot is doing exactly what it's told.

If you however show goodness and kindness to a friend over years, that friend has free will to love you or hate you. It is far better for someone to care for you out of their own free will than it is for a slave to obey you.

God gives us the gift of free will to love Him or to hate Him. Because He is in charge, He will do what he wants in the end, and there's nothing we can do to stop that. However we can choose to love the one who created us, gave us life, gave us breath, a mind to think, and emotions to feel.

Even more than that, God gave us His own son to pay the price for our sins on the cross so that we need not be punished for our sins.

It is impossible for a human on this side of eternity to be 100% submissive, no matter who he is. God wants us to turn to him out of our own free will, not out of pressure or forced submission.

    > 1)Why can't there be a 3rd or 4th option as well? 2) Why must the only way to escape to be a 100 percent loyal servant to god? 3) Why must god demand sincere love yet promises eternal torture if we don't?

    1) What would the 3rd or 4th option be? Why should there be a 3rd or 4th option? In a war there are usually two forces battling. You have three options. Side with one force, side with the other force, or remain neutral. But Jesus Himself said that there are only two masters we can serve. Matthew 6:24 "No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will hold to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth."

Jesus also said in Revelation 3 to be either hot or cold, because if you're lukewarm He will spit you out.

We are either waging war with God or waging war against God. There is no middle ground. It's a scary thought but it's what Jesus said.

    2) I think you have a mis-conception. We can never be 100% loyal to God. When we repent of our sins and trust in Jesus as our only hope, He changes us to want to love Him. Then He keeps us away from sin and cleans us from the inside out. Our loyalty to God is not forced, but desired. I love God because of all that He has done, and because I love God I want to obey Him. God is not some religion that you follow and do traditions that his wrath might be disburse. God desires a humble and contrite heart of someone who wants to obey the first and greatest commandment ... To love the Lord your God with all your heart, your soul, your mind, and your strength.

Love comes by knowing about someone and then knowing them personally. I would suggest reading through the book of John and look at Jesus as God, and see who He is.

    3) Because God died for you. That's why. If God himself died to pay your debt that you owed Him so that you can go free from the Just punishment you deserve, then by rejecting God's sacrifice for you, you're offending the very God who gave you life. He sacrificed Himself for you, and you reject the payment that he's offering?

That is like you being in court being found guilty of grand theft, and there is a fine of 3 million dollars. Then someone comes into the court room and says they sold everything they had to pay your fine and they just had enough. Then you say to them, that's OK, I'll just go to prison until I can pay the debt.

That's what you do by rejecting Christ and His sacrifice for you.

A serial rapist doesn't see the problem with raping people. The thief justifies his crimes. Serial murderers justify their crimes as well. As do liars, and blasphemers, and those who look at porn and those who get drunk, and others who are condemned.

It's only when you realize the seriousness of Sin, and the mighty eternal authority of God, that you will understand that eternal Hell is the Just punishment for offending such a good and Holy God.

One thing that the rich man did not do is cry out injustice when He went to hell. Read Luke 16:19-31. His punishment was fair and just.
